Redsn0w

Learn how to liberate your iPhone with new jailbreak tool that will give You access to all goodness of Cydia app store and even more in just 4 easy steps.

“Love the product, hate the company” - that is how many Apple users describe their attitudes towards their iPhones and its manufacturer. And it is pretty much true: we love our iPhones but hate the restrictive harness of legal and technical limitations.

Well, some would consider jailbreaking a bumpy road (and sometimes it is) but unleashing your iPhone potential from some artificial Cupertino-created limitations can open a lot of new talents of your favorite gadget.

Risks Related to Jailbreaking

Dev team

Jailbreaking any device whose manufacturer does not like such practices can turn risky. Especially if You do not follow the jailbreaking instructions like this one attentively enough. Besides this step-by-step guide we advise You to read through jailbreak instructions by iPhone Dev-Team, the original developers of major unlockers for Apple products.

Please read our instructions with care and attention if You don't want to brick Your shiny new iPhone toy or make it usable only as a mirror You can carry around with You.

The key warning of Dev-Team guys for this jailbreak relates to device compatibility. It is not compatible with phones that have unlockable basebands. In human language that “unlockable baseband phone” means that You can use it in different operator's networks just by swapping SIM cards in your iPhone. So, if You got factory-unlocked iPhone or unlocked it with Ultrasn0w — do not use this jailbreak.

When doing any kind of jailbreaking or modifications to all kind of devices old but true rule applies: “Better safe than sorry”. In our case it will sound “Better backup than sorry”. There are numerous backup utilities for iPhones out there, so use one of them which suits You better. If unsure use couple of them, since there is no such thing as too many backups.

This smokin’ hot jailbreak of iOS 5 is a tethered one. Basicallly, it means that You will need a computer with Redsn0w jailbreak application running on it to reboot a jailbroken iPhone. Yes, you've got it right — You won`t be able to reboot it if there is no laptop or desktop computer around available for tethering.

So, after You’ve been warned what can go wrong, let's move to freeing Your iPhone and unlocking all of its hidden potential!

Jailbreaking Your iPhone: step-by-step guide

Step 1: download the jailbreak tool

To set Your iPhone free You need a jailbreak utility called Redsn0w (yes, funny name, we know), developed by iPhone Dev-Team.

Windows and MacOS X version of the utility are available at the Dev-Team`s site.

Step 2: fire up Redsn0w and follow the jaibreak sequence

 Extras

Just double-click on Redsn0w icon.

You'll be greeted with a window that has two options:”Jailbreak” and “Extras”. At this moment, choose the “Jailbreak” option.

After this plug in Your iPhone and turn it off. Naturally, if You will not plug it in, nothing happens — this is IT, not magic.

So, let's repeat it once again — first plug in the device, then turn it off by pressing and holding “Power” button.

DFUReturn to Your computer and click “Next” button at Redsn0w window. Before You do this, get Yourself prepared to hold down different iPhone buttons for the amount of time Redsn0w will prompt You. This is needed to switch the device into DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode which is requredDev-Team for actual updating. Here are the sequences of buttons and timings You will need to press in order to enter the DFU mode:

  1. Press “Power” button for some 5 seconds
  2. Keep the “Power” button pressed and hold down “Home” button for another 10 seconds
  3. Now take Your finger away from Power button, but keep one on Home button for 10 seconds.

When doing this it is quite convenient to have around a digital clock which is capable of showing seconds. This makes guessing seconds so much easier.

After Your iPhone will enter the DFU mode, You're almost done, since Redsn0w will care about the rest. The utility will show different screens, but all You need to do is just sit and wait while Redsn0w is doing its job.

Step 3: install unofficial AppStore — Cydia

Cydia

The next step is about harvesting the yields of successful jailbreak. Yes, we are talking about installing support for Cydia which is a jailbrakers’ paradise of apps very similar to official App Store from Apple. It has hundreds of great applications which are not approved by Apple for some reasons, but provide some unique or fun features and capabilities.

So, do not unplug Your phone, we are not finished yet. Redsn0w will provide You a set of options to choose from. Make sure You've chosen install Cydia, then just press “Next” button. Redsn0w will again do everything by itself, so You do not need to react to all kinds of screens it will show. Better get yourself a coffee waiting for liberation of your iPhone.

Step 4: tethered reboot: why and how

As we have said earlier, after the jailbreak You’ll be able to reboot the device only if it is tethered to a computer. We do not actually know why it has to be this way, probably Apple’s security team knows well its job of keeping iPhones controlled. If you reboot the iPhone untethered, Cydia and Safary may just start crashing at no apparent reason. So, if You need to reboot Your phone after jailbreaking:

    - Connect Your iPhone to a computer

    - Open Redsn0w

    - Choose “Extras”

    - Press “Just boot” button

Voila - You are now a happy owner of a liberated iPhone with dozens of great apps and capabilities to use, play around and have fun with! If You are unsure about some details or want to know more about this latest jailbreak - check the iPhone Dev-Team site.

Fok Mauz

I am a bit scared. Ah! All these unknown apps…

Begemo

To Fok Mauz: then sit alone with your standard settings! I made jailbreak and everything is running smooth!

Peter

Thanks. It is the useful article.

Mike

I made it, but not at once. However, this method works.
